FAQ

  • Is this course in line with the neurodiversity movement?

Yes! As an autistic individual herself, Dr. Marnell strives to develop supportive resources which are fully in line with neurodiversity-affirming practice. In Dr. Lisa's OT practice and in her teaching at Boston University, she works to educate other professionals on the importance of listening to and respecting autistic voices and their unique lived experiences.

  • What does it mean by a PROACTIVE approach in this course?

All too often, the unique neurology, sensory processing, executive function, and praxis skills of autistic individuals are not considered in either the demands they face, the environmental characteristics, or the curriculum presented to autistic kids. Then, when these children or teens become frustrated, simple sensory strategies - or worse, inappropriate behavioral incentives are used to address a child's actions. The term, PROACTIVE, in this course means that an autistic child is set up to succeed from the start through understanding and respecting their unique strengths and traits, such as their interests, their sensory needs, and their requirements for processing time.

  • So . . . this isn't a behavioral approach to autism?

No, not in any way, shape, or form. Top-down behavioral approaches like ABA assume that an autistic child is able to change his or her behavior when incentives such as favorite toys or foods are withheld. Yet, this assumption of top-down control is neither realistic, nor respectful, for autistic children and teens who have different neurology from their typical peers. In fact, Helping Kids Master CALM is a child-centered alternative to ABA, which has been documented to cause trauma in autistic people.

  • Is this a type of cookie-cutter program that will give me specific activities to do with my autistic students?

This program is a training, and Dr. Lisa will teach you how do build the pillars she has developed to respectfully and proactively support autistic kids at home and school. These pillars are COMMUNICATION, ACCOMMODATIONS, LEARNING, and MOOD. Each pillar has 5 proactive measures for you to implement. So, you won't be provided "activities" per se (although many activities will be used in teaching examples). Instead you will learn how to set up your autistic kids for success by appreciating their needs and implementing the supports that benefit them.

  • Will I have lifetime access to the comprehensive training, Helping Kids Master CALM . . . and do I have to pay more for this?

Lifetime access is guaranteed! If you watched Dr. Marnell's FREE Masterclass on how to support sensory sensitive kids, then you know that one of her goals is to contribute to changing the paradigm so the all autistic children and teens are treated respectfully, with adults in their lives having an educated understanding of their unique neurology. Dr. Lisa fully intends to continually improve this course over the years. So, yes, lifetime access is included in the purchase price, and you won't have to spend another dime to maintain full access to this course and its updates!
